DCP's Atlanta City Studio To Relocate To South Downtown

After two successful years of operating the Department of City Planning's Atlanta City Studio in Cascade Heights, it will relocate from southwest Atlanta to South Downtown later this summer. After evaluating several potential locations, The Studio selected its new home at 99 Broad Street SW, Atlanta, GA 30303.

The pop-up studio helps communities design their neighborhoods and engages residents to weigh in on the future of Atlanta. It moves to different locations throughout the city to make its work as publicly accessible as possible. Its new location will help provide design leadership in South Downtown’s coming transformation. Developer Newport, who owns the new Studio building, has recently acquired properties in South Downtown and is working to bring active programming to them.

"Being in the center of the city is the perfect place for the Studio’s next location" - Planning Commissioner Tim Keane

This move puts the Studio in a central location well-served by MARTA transit, with the hope more residents will have the opportunity to help shape our city.

“The Atlanta City Studio will be progressing in the way it works – in how we pursue better design and in how we help residents shape the city. We learned a lot in Cascade Heights from the residents of southwest Atlanta. That will influence our Studio efforts in downtown Atlanta,” explained Planning Commissioner Tim Keane. “Now is a time the Planning Department as a whole, needs to be more like our Studio. Being in the center of the city is the perfect place for the Studio’s next location.”

The Studio believes it’s imperative residents have an opportunity to play an integral role in the designing of Atlanta. They provide leadership in this area through project-specific design, partner collaboration, educational programming, and inclusive community engagement.

The Studio was first opened at Ponce City Market in May 2016 where it remained for a year. It relocated to Cascade Heights in April 2017. Since then the work has included the Cascade Storefront Redesign Program, Beecher Street design concept, Cascade Bus Canopy design and construction, and, most recently, a design concept for the multi-generational housing near the Cascade Heights Commercial District.
